When Perfection Takes Over
Do you ever put so much pressure on yourself to reach perfection that it prevents you from taking action and robs the fun out of what you are doing?
Sometimes I struggle with the fact that I want to get everything perfect and do it right and make sure it’s of excellence because that’s the standard I hold.
My drive for perfection is what has brought me to where I am in my life, but it also could be the very thing holding me back. Ever heard the saying what got you here what get you there?
Sometimes I just want to get things done and move on other times I want to be super analytical and ensure it’s done perfectly.
But we all know there’s no such thing as perfection.
I actually got an email last week that resonated so well with me it was only 60 words and the message “How can I make this easy? Fun, even?”
Sometimes as high achievers, we have such high goals that we forget to have fun along the way.
Often times after we hit a goal we have worked so hard to achieve we can feel empty and immediately think is that all? What’s next?
There is a documentary about Olympic athletics after the Olympics are over and the struggles they have and the depression they face. Check out the trailer “The Weight of Gold”.
If you’re familiar with the Tony Robbins RPM system for planning, I realized when I would go to set my goals for the week oftentimes I would plan my business goals and I wouldn’t schedule my personal outcomes for the week.
You all know I am all about business but if we don’t pursue and work on all areas of our life we will end up suffering in other areas.
I love having fun in business too but when my need for perfection takes over it steals the fun right out of the process.
Embrace imperfection: I know easier said than done. But once we can become aware of the fact that we are all imperfect humans and that making mistakes is part of the process the quicker we can actually get to hitting our goal. Give yourself permission to be imperfect and focus on progress over perfection.
Set realistic goals: Setting unrealistic goals can lead to feelings of overwhelm and frustration. Instead, set realistic goals that challenge you but are also achievable. Break larger goals into smaller, more manageable steps so that you can celebrate your progress along the way.
Practice self-compassion: For me this is grace. How can I show myself even more grace right now is the question I ask myself when I find myself beating myself up over “imperfection”.
Focus on the process, not just the outcome: Instead of obsessing over the outcome or end result, focus on the process of getting there. Enjoy the journey and the progress you make along the way. Celebrate your successes and learn from your mistakes.
Have fun along the way! I mean if not why are we setting these goals?
Remember, nobody is perfect, and it’s okay to make mistakes.
Embrace imperfection and focus on progress over perfection.
